Dragon fruit (or Pitaya) is a fruit grown in Southeast Asia, Mexico, Central and South America, and Israel. Dragon fruit is a fruit of certain types of cacti.
Dragon fruit comes in three types:
1. Red Dragon fruit with red skin and white flesh
2. Costa Rica Dragon fruit with red skin and red flesh
3. Yellow Dragon fruit with yellow skin and white flesh
To choose a ready-to-eat Dragon fruit it is recommended to look for a ripe piece. The fruit should be firm but slightly soft when you squeeze it. Dragon fruit can be eaten cold as well as at room temperature, it all depends on personal preference. However, cold dragon fruit will be more refreshing and will have an improved flavor.
To eat Dragon fruit, simply cut it vertically in half. Take a spoon and scoop the flesh out. You can also cut the halves into watermelon style slices. Eating Dragon fruit is sometimes similar to that of kiwifruit due to the resemblance of black crunchy seeds found in the flesh in both fruits and their similar flesh texture. However, the skin of Dragon fruit is not edible.
Dragon fruit can be eaten directly or can be used for making juices, frozen drinks or even wine. It also makes a perfect addition to fruit salads and different types of deserts. Furthermore, Dried Dragon fruit is an excellent additive to other dried fruits and nuts mixtures. The flowers of this fruit can be eaten, or steeped as tea.
Dragon fruit is very refreshing and mildly sweet. It is very low on calories and contains numerous health beneficial nutrients and vitamins.
